Understanding and defeating cavities

Cavities are not inevitable. We are here to show you how a proper hygiene routine can make all the difference. When your daily diet leaves sugar residue on your teeth, bacteria feed on it and produce demineralizing acids. With our advice and care, you can stop this process, strengthen your enamel, and keep your smile healthy.

Oral health: a pillar of your overall well-being

The health of your mouth is a reflection of your overall health and well-being.
To maintain optimal oral health, several key elements must be taken into account:

1

Regular brushing and proper technique

Effective brushing, at least twice a day, is essential. Use a soft-bristled toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste. The brushing technique should be gentle, i.e., the brush should be held at a 45-degree angle and circular movements should be used. It is also important to cover all surfaces of the teeth and gums.

2

Use of dental floss

Dental floss is not just a supplement, but a necessity. It helps remove plaque and food debris between the teeth and under the gums, where the brush cannot reach.

3

Eating a balanced diet that is low in sugar

A diet rich in fruits and vegetables and low in sugar contributes to good dental health. Sugary foods promote the formation of cavities.

4

Adequate hydration

Drinking enough water helps maintain good salivation, which is essential for rinsing away some of the residue from food and helping to protect teeth from cavities.

5

Regular visits to the dentist

Regular routine checkups and professional cleanings are crucial. They allow problems to be detected and treated before they become serious.

6

Avoid tobacco

Smoking is one of the worst enemies of oral health. It increases the risk of gum disease, tooth decay, tooth loss, and oral cancer.

By incorporating these practices into your daily routine, you will go a long way toward maintaining optimal oral health, which is essential to your overall well-being. Remember, a healthy smile reflects a healthy life!

Routine exams and a comprehensive assessment for our new and existing patients

During your first visit to our clinic, a comprehensive exam is performed to assess your oral health and provide you with personalized care. This comprehensive exam is essential for preventing dental problems and maintaining your bright smile. This information is repeated or updated during routine visits.

The following aspects are taken into account during your initial comprehensive assessment and subsequent routine examinations:

  • General Health Assessment: Your overall health and any medical conditions you have can affect the condition of your mouth, as can your lifestyle habits. It’s important to start by discussing all of these factors.
  • Dental and Gum Health Assessment: Your dentist begins by examining the condition of your teeth and gums. They look for signs of cavities and tartar and assess the health of your gums. This includes checking for inflammation, bleeding, or gum recession.
  • Oral Cancer Screening: A crucial part of the exam is screening for oral cancer. Your dentist examines your tongue, the inside of your cheeks, and other parts of your mouth for suspicious lesions or sores.
  • Checking existing restorations: If you have fillings, crowns, bridges, or implants, the dentist will check their condition and integrity.
  • Digital X-rays: We use the Panorex digital extraoral X-ray machine, as well as the Carestream CS 8100SC cephalometric X-ray machine to capture high-quality images of the teeth and oral structures with minimal radiation exposure. One of the major advantages of these devices is their ability to provide clear and detailed images, which are essential for an accurate diagnosis. This allows our dentists to detect problems such as cavities, infections, periodontal disease, and other dental abnormalities with great precision.
  • Intraoral camera: We also use the Carestream CS1500 to take photos of the inside of your mouth, helping you better understand what is happening and the recommended treatment.
  • Bite analysis:B Your dentist can assess how your upper and lower teeth align when you close your mouth. A poor bite can lead to jaw problems and tooth wear.

The importance of cleaning

This routine examination is a fundamental step in maintaining the health of your mouth and smile. It allows problems to be detected at an early stage and ensures prompt and effective treatment. Cleaning, on the other hand, removes all deposits and residues that accumulate on the walls of the mouth and teeth. During this essential procedure, the dental hygienist works to remove plaque and tartar buildup, bacterial deposits that are the source of gum disease.
