Dental sealant
Prevention is better than treatment
At Le Dentalis clinics in downtown Montreal, near the Guy-Concordia metro station, and in the Côte-des-Neiges borough, near the station of the same name, we offer a wide range of preventive treatments. Our care helps reduce the risk of developing cavities, infections, and other types of dental problems.
The importance of regular visits to the dentist
Regular visits to the dentist are essential for maintaining good oral health at any age.
These appointments not only allow for a thorough professional cleaning, but also for the early detection of any potential problems such as cavities, gum disease, and other abnormalities. It's also a good time to discuss dental prevention and plan for preventive care. For example, a sealant may be recommended, a simple treatment that provides extra protection against cavities. Regular routine checkups ensure that your mouth remains healthy and that any preventive or corrective treatment is applied optimally.
Dental sealants: your shield against cavities
Dental sealants are a thin layer of protective material applied to the chewing surfaces of molars and premolars. Their role is to fill in the pits and fissures where food particles and bacteria are likely to accumulate, thereby reducing the risk of cavities. This preventive treatment is particularly recommended for children and adolescents as soon as their first permanent molars appear, but it can also benefit adults. Dental sealants are easy to apply, durable, and an effective way to maintain pristine teeth and optimal oral health.
During a routine examination, your dentist will offer you preventive solutions to stop cavities from developing.
Children's oral health: a commitment to the future
Children's oral health is a crucial aspect of their overall well-being. Good oral hygiene from an early age, including regular brushing with fluoride toothpaste, is essential for preventing cavities and maintaining healthy teeth. Dental sealants play an important role in this prevention by providing additional protection against cavities for teeth that are difficult to clean. In addition, when used in combination with fluoride, they form a powerful duo for strengthening tooth enamel and preventing cavities, especially in areas that are difficult to reach when brushing. These treatments are quick, painless, and can make a significant difference in preventing dental problems in the future. We encourage parents to consider dental sealants as an essential step in their children's dental care routine.
Key steps for effective tooth brushing
Sealants offer additional protection, but they do not exempt you from good oral hygiene habits. Effective tooth brushing is crucial for maintaining good oral health. Here are the recommended steps for optimal brushing:
Choosing a toothbrush
Use a soft-bristled toothbrush to avoid damaging the gums and tooth enamel. The brush head should be small enough to easily reach all areas of the mouth.
Amount of toothpaste
Apply a pea-sized amount of toothpaste. For children under three years of age, use a rice-sized amount.
Flossing
To remove small debris and bacteria stuck between your teeth and under your gums, floss daily.
Brushing movements
Hold your toothbrush at a 45-degree angle and use small circular or vertical movements on all surfaces of each tooth—outer, inner, and chewing surfaces. Be sure to brush gently so you don't hurt your gums.
Duration
Brush your teeth for at least two minutes. Use a timer if necessary to ensure you spend enough time brushing.
Brushing your tongue and the inside of your cheeks
Don't forget to brush the inside of your cheeks and your tongue, or use a tongue scraper to remove bacteria and freshen your breath.
Frequency
Brush your teeth at least twice a day, ideally in the morning and before bed at night.
